I’ve read a small mountain of leadership books and I wouldn’t take anything away from what I gleaned from them. They taught me about leadership, about myself and about great ways to interact with others. They collectively taught me these things. Bud to Boss puts all of that in one package, and more!
To be honest, I was a bit unsure of all the hype around a book. I’m not a big fan of “canned” solutions because leadership is so much based on situations, people and contributing factors. I have a love/hate relationship with being proven wrong. Kevin and Guy made it much less painful. They do an amazing job of providing viable and valuable direction while still keeping the balance of understanding the need for flexibility and customization to fit the innumerable challenges people face in leadership (whether newbies or seasoned practitioners).
I found myself re-visiting leadership principles and ideas I hadn’t been forced to exercise for some time and I felt like I was just getting into the game again. Leadership development, organizational culture and employee engagement is what my business is all about and I still found myself in a place of learning while reading this book. The title is both appropriate and humbly misleading. Don’t discount the value of its contents even if you’re a battle scarred veteran of leadership.
There were so many practical examples of a healthy way to do leadership in such areas as:
- How to manage the new transition (first time or changing levels)
- Managing expectations (of yourself and others)
- Conflict Resolution
- And heaps more!
The list is so much bigger than that, but you get the idea. I very rarely use the word comprehensive about anything, especially leadership, but I would have to say this is one of the most comprehensive works done on the subject of leadership I’ve seen in over a decade.
Any organization, HR department, CLO, or training center that is serious about developing quality leaders should have this book as a part of their required reading and as a reference source. There is no way you can keep all the contents of this book in your head and still focus on the rest of your tasks.
The book is just part of what Kevin and Guy have put together. There is a community that has even more content beyond the book. That’s just sick! Not enough? No worries. These guys are serious about helping others. They have booked live events in nearly 30 U.S. cities extending from February until November of 2011 just to help people make the transition from Bud to Boss. Find out more about the live events and training here. That site also contains training resources to facilitate on-site training.
Don’t view Bud To Boss as just another leadership book; it is truly a customizable leadership development program. Launch day is February 15th, so make sure you get your copy! You can buy it here, and yes it’s available on Kindle too. These guys thought of everything!
